Hi everyone and welcome to the session! My name is Charlie and I am one of the admission officers at Oxy. I am joined by Cris, Michelle, and Joscelyn - we’ll be answering some of your questions in the chat box. Be sure to set your chats to “All panelists and attendees” so that everyone can see your questions.
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
32:35
@Andrew: Bike share is a free bike rental service that Oxy offers to students. This links to a cute little video about bike share - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HR-2XoNjKg!
ADMISSION OFFICER: Charlie Leizear

@Matthew ask away!
Wallis Shepard
35:36
Can you study statistics?
Jayson
36:35
Is there a major for Music Production?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
37:49
@Wallis you can take multiple statistics courses within our Math major. To read more about the math department, feel free to check this out! https://www.oxy.edu/academics/areas-study/mathematics
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
38:58
@Matthew: Food studies is interdisciplinary, so it studies the history, of food, cultural practices surrounding food, and more. For example, courses in food studies includes everything from "Sociology of Food" to "Food & The Environment" to "Nutrition & Homeostasis."
Matthew R.
39:54
Ok thanks.
Wallis Shepard
40:47
Thank you1

Also, for the diplomacy and world affairs major, does that degree/major help students with that kind of career to certain organizations like the U.S Government, United Nations, etc? I was considering this major if I plan to go to Oxy, alongside music, food studies, and political science as other potential majors/minors.
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
51:58
@Matthew Absolutely! While our DWA students are not pigeonholed into working in international relations after graduation, many do pursue a career in the field. Our information session doesn’t have the time to cover every opportunity that Oxy students have access to, but you should know that Oxy offers a full time, residential internship at the UN in NYC. We are the only school with a residential internship at the UN! Feel free to check out the DWA page for more information on the major and what grads are doing (https://www.oxy.edu/academics/areas-study/diplomacy-world-affairs) and for more information on the UN program, check this out (https://www.oxy.edu/academics/areas-study/diplomacy-world-affairs/kahane-un-program)

53:09
How many people are typically in a freshman dorm room?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
54:53
@Ali Most first years are paired with 1 other roommate, so 2 people total. We also have singles (1 person) and triple (3 person) rooms.
Ali Simon-Parker
55:36
Thank you!
Amelia Whitcomb
58:13
How does the school help pre-med students prepare?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
58:43
@Amelia At Oxy we have a pre-med advisor that works with our students who are preparing for medical school or another health profession. The advisor works with you to make sure you take the courses required, are prepared for entrance exams, help you find internships and research that will make you a competitive applicant, and help you with the application process. In terms of majors - you get to choose! Most students are life science majors but as long as you take the courses required you will be prepared.
Amelia Whitcomb
01:01:00
Awesome thanks!
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
01:03:29
@Amelia We’ve hosted entire sessions about the ways that Oxy supports our pre-health and pre-med students! As a junior, some highlights: Oxy is committed to helping every single student or alum interested in going into the health professions—this is unusual. Many schools have a screening process (you need to be a certain major, have a certain GPA, etc), but we work with every student that comes in the door at any point in their academic journey or career. Our pre-health team works closely with students to ensure they are getting their pre-req courses completed, doing the necessary clinical hours, volunteer hours, making sure you are doing research, etc. They will also help you as you go through the application process, including the med school matching process. Check out their page for more info: https://www.oxy.edu/academics/academic-support/pre-health-advising

Question for students: What is life like as a student athlete?? Especially on the swim team.

What are the options for dining?
Wendy Walter
01:07:46
What kind of academic support systems are available?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
01:08:06
@Wallis About 15%-20% of our students are typically involved in Greek Life, and students are not allowed to join an organization until the end of their first year. It can be a great way to meet new people and have some more structure to social life on campus, but most of their events are open to all students. We aren’t a very clique-y school broadly, and whether or not you’re in Greek Life won’t determine your social life. It is a large enough community for there to be diversity among students involved, but it is also small enough that it doesn't dominate student life activities on campus.
Dashiel Tao Harris
01:08:24
What is your favorite place on or around campus?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
01:08:53
@Amelia There is no separate app for merit!

01:09:13
What are the general food options for students at Oxy?
Betsy Levine
01:09:18
Are there community service opportunities through Oxy?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
01:09:30
@Shayla We are a DIII school. As you know, they say that DI schools you are an athlete and then a student, DII is an equal athlete and student, but DIII academics is the priority. This is reflected in our admission process. The coach write a letter of recommendation to be included in your file, which would be a similar letter if you were a musician/singer/thespian and sent in a Slideroom submission that was evaluated. I don’t think many students expect to go professional in their sport at Oxy—they’re here to do what they love, but also contribute to the academic community!
Shayla S.
01:10:11
Thank you so much!
Emily Kenner
01:10:36
Are Subject tests recommended?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
01:11:02
@Rorie Classes in the humanities tend to be largely discussion-based and classes in the sciences tend to be more lecture-based, however there is often lecture and discussion in all classes. The average class size is 18, so small classes allow students to connect.
Ali Simon-Parker
01:11:11
Do you need a portfolio before choosing a MAC major your sophomore year? Are there a lot of opportunities to gain more experience and to take advantage of the LA film scene? What is it like getting film jobs after college?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
01:11:30
@Rebecca (re: how often do you go off campus) Depends on the student and the classes you are taking. Socially, I think most students take the weekend (Friday night and Saturday… Sunday is mostly homework) to the explore, but you’ll probably have classes or internships that take you into the city! Other students do more, other students do less!
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
01:12:06
@Aslan Many of our students (60%) have cars on campus and it is free to park on campus all four years! However, having a car is not required. We also provide free access to metro passes so all Oxy students can ride public transportation around Los Angeles and we offer a program called the Bengal Bus. This is a free service that drives students to and from campus, anywhere within a 5 mile radius. Lastly, we also have a Bike Share program where students can check out bikes to get around.
ADMISSION OFFICER: Charlie Leizear
01:12:08
@Emily - we do not require subject tests, but if you do well - feel free to send in your results. With limited testing in 2020, we suspect most students won’y be able to take subject tests
Amelia Whitcomb
01:13:47
How does the interview process work?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
01:13:56
@Betsy (re: service opps) Yes! Lots and lots! It all depends on what you want to do and who you want to work with. We have entire offices on campus involved with getting students in service, particularly in the LA area (SLICE, OCE). We also have days of service as well as an alternative spring break that focuses on service!
Betsy Levine
01:14:32

01:15:05
When do students declare a major?
ADMISSION OFFICER: Charlie Leizear
01:15:46
@Amelia - we strongly recommend that all students interview. We offer interviews during the fall of your senior year, and the summer before. Most interviews are completed by alumni in your hometown. Signups for interviews will be available in late summer
ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
01:15:57
@Wallis (re: declaring a major) You’ll have until the end of your second year at Oxy to declare your major!
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
01:16:35
@Wendy We know Oxy is rigorous and we want to ensure Oxy students succeed, so there are a lot of resources to help students academically. The entire bottom floor of the library is home to the “Center for Digital Liberal Arts” (CDLA), which includes peer tutoring services across academic disciplines and a writing center that offers writing assistance from peer and faculty advisers. We also have an Academic Mastery Program (AMP), a Scientific Scholars Achievement Program (SSAP), and a Critical Making Studio (CMS) with graphic design software, sound booth/audio studio, free audio/video equipment rental, and a 3D printer.

@Naomi (re: MAC careers) Check out the MAC webpage for what grads are doing (https://www.oxy.edu/academics/areas-study/media-arts-culture). You’ll notice it’s everything from documentary filmmakers to product developers. MAC majors, like all Oxy students, are very nimble!

ADMISSION OFFICER: Michelle Naito-Lo
01:22:11
@Ali, you do not have to submit a portfolio to major in Media Arts and Culture. All majors are open to all students. However, if you do submit a Slideroom Portfolio it can be an enhancement to your general admission application.
ADMISSION OFFICER: Joscelyn Guzman
01:22:16
@Shayla Great question! One of my best friends at Oxy was a Kinesiology major and she has such a unique opportunity to conduct kinesiology research in the city of LA (which you can't do without the city). She even published her research when she was a student! Our kinesiology professors are incredible, especially Professor Raney (personal opinion).
ADMISSION OFFICER: Charlie Leizear
01:22:31
@Hala - while most students who pursue the UN semester are Diplomacy & World Affairs majors, it is absolutely open to all students!
